The E420 is about 75% of the performance you'd get out of the screaming E500, so they are a really great near-sport sedan. they are very well balanced, go really fast, and handle and corner, very very well right out of the box.
This is one of the very last of the uber high quality, cost no object cars, built when the engineers had the upper hand, so it will last for intergalactic mileages while providing modern safety amenities like ABS and SRS and not be crippled with electronic gizmos and computers all over the place.
They are still in use this day as taxis in some areas, so they are very, very tough and capable, and just right for for people and luggage.
It is said they do get a bit hotter under the hood than the 300 which has more room under the hood.
There is a LOT to like about the '94-'95 E420. They are near the end of the model run, and that means all bugs are sorted out pretty well, and the environmentally friendly wiring harnesses were added on purpose, unfortunately. They look especially nice with the euro-like headlights on them that they came with, and actual euro headlights are even better.
If you have one already, it's maybe the best choice for a Mercedes with the very very best of the old AND new.
If you are looking, get it inspected, and if all systems are go and you like the color, be prepared to buy it right away, and look forward to a long lasting love affair with this car.
They are really really great cars, in every way that counts, only the 500E outperforms them.
