I am able to remove using the following steps.

Remove the black trip piece around the shifter gate. Use a plastic knife to pry it up.

Partially close the cupholder door with one hand and reach under the console piece holding the switches with the other hand and pull up gently and evenly as to not twist the wood and crack it.

unplug the switches and remove from bottom by sliding the clips to the opening and the switch module should come right out.
