I've had two such intermittant rubbing sounds.. one was the E-brake shoes rubbing, but a little care helped them. Stopping and setting-releasing them would change the sound, but sometimes I had to do that facing up hill and let them take the weight of the car to shift them around.

The other was really weird.. the sense wire on the front passenger side was rubbing on the inside of the wheel. On right turns, I'd get more sounds then on left turns, and it did it more after driving home than driving to work. I was sure it was a wheel bearing because it sounded like a grinding sound when it rubbed. There was also another clue -- in the rain, the brake pad wear light would go on faintly and intemittantly.. but never when dry. Yup, the rubbing had worn through the insulation and it made better contact with the wheel in the rain. I didn't find this until I had the front wheel off to check the condition of the brake pads and noticed the errant wire.

Of course, as far as I knew nobody had touched the bearings recently, but the car was still new to me at the time.
