Whenever I have worked it out, the cost in labor of a shop doing a job is almost always more or less what the cost of the tools to do the job end up being. Assuming you have the basic essentials (3/8 and 1/2" socket set, jack, jack stands). One trip to harbor freight will set you up with a decent set of tools for under $200. The only exception so far to this rule is wheel alignments.
