One, in fact, happened this spring only a mile from my house, at a Burger King drive-up window, and only 20 minutes before I left for work. The cops still had the three-lane boulevard in front of the BK blocked, and they detoured all the traffic onto dark narrow side streets where we'd have been sitting ducks for other gun-toting criminals.

Sometimes I have trouble shaking the notion that my days are numbered if I stay here.
