I'm pretty sure that BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) appeared in England first and then was found in Canadian cattle. There have been a couple of cases in the US but, if IIRC, it was confined to a few older cattle that had been imported from Canada. The animals and their herds were quarantined and the afflicted animals destroyed.
Additionally, the USDA now prohibits use of
any spinal material in ground beef (BSE is a nervous system disease).
