Contact customer service by email or fax listed at the top of the thread for confirmation. I think the only thing you might get away with is being able to drive across the border with your State Plates. If you can do this, you still will need a letter of admissibility for your vehicle before MB will even look at your car to do the modifications.

If you declare that you are moving to Canada to the border guards, then that is when they will ding you with the GST (i believe). If you don't pay it then, you will pay it when you register your car in your province. This is when Customs gives you and sends you the RIV information and forwards your vehicle info to RIV. You can also contact RIV, go to RIV.CA

Then be prepared to be ripped off by their excessive requirements and charges. Once you got that done, then you to show the paperwork to Canadian Tire. Canadian Tire will confirm 2 things.

1) your vehicle is admissible (you have the MB admissibility letter), and that the vehicle has been modified to meet Canadian standards (from MB paperwork confirming work as been done).

2) your vehicle meets provincial safety requirements (at least here in BC you have to). You can get Canadian Tire to do this or any shop authorized to do this. Canadian Tire charges about $100 for the safety check (checks brakes, seatbelts, tire tread depth, shocks etc.)

What kind of car and year are you importing?

Where are you moving to?

IMO, this is a class action because MB is trying to protect their dealer networks. THe car prices (used and new) are thousands of dollars more than in the US. This is clearly against NAFTA. if you talk to a NAFTA lawyer, you can perhaps do all of the modifications, and pay for it, and then later sue MB Canada as they are operating clearing against NAFTA.

I currently have an E36 M3 but I was planning on selling it and getting a mid 90's diesel MB a few months before moving back because the M3 does not fare well on Canadian roads. I also have the 85 300d but I would leave it with my parents here in Georgia.
