Not really a big deal on this up here - barely made the news. Canadians have a different attitude towards this kind of thing I think. A recent poll showed most Canadians don't mind giving up some privacy issues for increased security.
I think the prevailing attitude is - "if you have nothing to hide, then what is the problem?"
In this case, a walking time-bomb was taken off the streets. Yes, I see the point of view in terms of slippery slope, but I suppose we trust our police and governments enough to not start to arrest normal, average citizens at random.
I don't know the full scope of their capabilities, but I know the RCMP have a large arsenal of legal options backing them up - i.e. laws like this one.
Besides, if our governments/leader(s) ever get out of hand, we'll just bring them down in the House of Commons and get a new one.
