I've actually washed several donated computers. The latest was completely choked with dust, fur and cigarette ash - the power supply fan had jammed and burned out, which was why the computer would shut down when it got too hot.
I took the computer down to bare boards and blew everything out with compressed air, but it still stank. Having nothing to lose, I dunked everything in warm soapy water, rinsed and dried off with compressed air. After putting everything back together with a new fan, it worked just fine - and has done so now for three months non stop. BTW - it runs Ubuntu.
