It seems from what I read that one of those boys had been in a lot of trouble with the law, including violence, as a juvenile. Tough guys get respect in school and I imagine he had some weak-minded followers who didn't want to be excluded from giving the kid a well-deserved butt-kicking. Too bad they found it necessary to gang-up on him -- why not just allow Mr Tuffguy to demonstrate his abilities?
It's a sorry affair blown way, way out of proportion by small-minded people who have a racial vendetta who were unintentionally aided and abetted by dumbasses in law enforcement and the DA's office.
Had the principal's approach been followed this crap would have remained what it actually was, teenaged boys showing-off and one getting hurt. It happens like, a million times a year.
