I think part of the problem is that moderns (except for fundamentalists) have a hard time imagining being motivated by theological considerations. Having never read theology, taken a theology class, or engaged in heated theological discussions because such matters are not rational but simply 'issues of faith', modern people look at people who do theology as the equivalent of doctors looking to balance the humours.
