Once you complete the traffic school, you send your certificate in to the DMV or the Court, then the charges on the ticket are dismissed. It's wise to check your DMV record a few months later to make sure it is still clean.
(You kept a copy of the traffic school certificate just in case).

Most states don't allow the use of this "gift" more than once every 12-18 months though

In TX we call it deferred adjudication. As long as you stay clean for 6 month in that county you will not get points.
