Think of SD as S class diesel. 78-80 SD would be a 116 Chassis, 81-85 would be a 126 Chassis. A 300D from 77 to 85 would be a 123 chassis.
A 126 will usually return better mpg then a 123 even though its a bigger car due to more wind tunnel influence in its design.
