What a bad deal! Sorry to hear your friend spent all the time and money to go to L.A. for a bad car, more so he only got $500 back. What I can't believe is that he is going after other cars sold on eBay. Unless the car can be inspected first, I would avoid buying on eBay.

eBay used to have insurance available with a maximum of $300 available. You should have your friend check into eBay's insurance to see if he can recover some of his loss.

Buying on eBay is a serious "buyer beware" experience even with sellers with 100's and even 1,000's of positive feedbacks. I've taken serious issue with eBay's lack of mandatory condition disclosure requirements (unlike their half.com operation) with no results.

Good Luck!
Tom
