They can go bad over time, not usually. They are sort of like a thermostat, the switch is reacting to the rising temp and either opening of closing to add or stop vacuum flow.
They are dissimilar metals so they can get nice and tight in the manifold.
At least you dont have to worry about breaking the nipples off it when you are removing it... Online it cost about $30, dealer likely $40-45
