You want the security, come back to work.

There are certain perks I have as an employee, but I would expect them to dry up in short order if I called my employer and told him that I wasn't going to be coming in any more. Oh sure, I'll still be an employee... I just won't come to the actual shop. I'll just stay where I want, doing what I feel serves me best, and occasionally calling in to offer my thoughts on a work related issue.

I'm thinking it would go over about as well as a fart in church, or possibly not quite that well.

She left in fear for her life. She was promised protection if she would speak-out on issues affecting Muslim women. True, she is no longer able to serve in parliament. I have no idea how the Dutch parliamentary system works. Here in the USA if you're elected to Congress nobody can force you to go to Washington after election. (Come to think of it, we'd probably be better off if most Congressmen never did go to work).

Anyway, the Dutch could have simply and quietly quit paying for her protection. How was justice served by announcing that she would no longer receive that promised protection?

She is enduring religious persecution of the sort Europe hasn't seen in 300-400 years. What was her crime? It wasn't even about internecine conflict. She is facing assassination because she spoke out in a western democracy about injustice perpetrated against women in the name of religion. She is proving once again that free speech is not cheap, she may pay with her life. For what reason would she do that?

What are the chances that other women will have the courage to face their oppressors, given the treatment this wonderful, brave woman has received from a liberal democracy?
