Well, these things have a tendency to multiply – or so I have found out. But let me start with the beginning; while in college I drove a cab – in Europe – to make a couple of extra bucks. As you might know MB is widely used as cabs in Europe and I was lucky enough to work for an owner of 3 W124 (250D and 2 300D) so I got to drive a lot of miles in MBs before I was 25. I have always promised that I would get one for myself when I could afford it so last summer I got a new W211 (E500).

Happy as could be my wife came to me and told me that her car at the time was dying and she thought that we should start looking for a new for her. One that would allow her to ‘haul’ stuff as she put it. I started looking and found a ’99 W163 (ML430) for about $11K of a MB dealers lot with just one owner. All service was done at that dealer so I got a chance to look though the service records and the previous owner had all service done with more than due diligence. The car drives as a champ. That was the second MB within less than a year.

Do you all remember Dallas the soap? Bobby was driving a R107 and ever since that series I have been hooked on the body style and look. When I got the W211 I also joined the MBCA (Mercedes Benz Owners club of America) and ran into a great bunch of people and several had R107’s. Well, to say the least that didn’t help at all! I introduced my wife to the 107 and she also thought that it looked very nice and after she got to drive one she was hooked and I got permission to buy one(!)

I found a Diamond Blue ’87 560SL in Florida a couple of month ago (less than a year from getting the W211) and got it for $8500. Since it landed in my driveway I have adjusted the mixture, changed the chain and rails, oiler rails, motor mounts (all 3), front and rear subframe mounts, cold start valve, plugs & wires, rotor and cab, valve cover seals and stuffs I have forgotten.

My problem now is that if these things continue to multiply at the rate they have done so far I am going to run out of garage space. Anyway, I am enjoying motoring in the 107 and realize that I should have gotten one a long time ago.

My age? – well, if you use the 560 as a starting point I am only 21!
