Don't know what the holes in the gunwhales of the truck are called, but in VA and NC those wooden railings are called 'sides.' My uncles would say, "JD, put the sides on one of the work trucks and get the chute ready, we gotta move a boar up the road."
One thing about moving hogs in pick ups with sides--damn sure make you got a 'side' between the pig and the back windshield. I had ridden many times on these adventures and knew that when the boar (or sow) gets riled up, you slam on brakes and knock it on its ass a few times to calm it down. Well, on a solo run, Mr. Know it all 16 yo moved one by himself. I don't think I have ever been so scared as looking in the rearview when I slammed on brakes and that 900# hog came flying into the back glass of the truck. Glad they came out with safety glass before 1975!! (sorry for the hijack, but I've been away for a while and felt like sharing).
