Try pulling off the button that unlatches the cover (just glued in with a weak adhesive). See if it will unlatch if you press the tabs that the button attaches to. If it does, the latch is fine, you just need to put some small shims inside the the holes in the button that the tabs fit into so that they get pressed in far enough to unlatch the cover.
