Here's a photo of the test cable I was referring to. It is designed to be used with the fancy factory compression tester, but it can be rigged to work with a home-made button so you can crank the engine without using the key. For the +12v feed you run a wire to a clip that attaches to the battery terminal. Here's the procedure, with more info, from the factory service manual (250k PDF file) :
