During the Spanish flue epidemic of 1917 (or so) my grandfather took care of his inlaws who were all infected with the virus, changing bedpans, bedclothes etc. He kept a big black cigar in his mouth the entire time he was over there and believed that that was why he never got sick.

I believe there were more GIs that died of the Spanish flue in ww1 than from action.....wonder if that is kept separately in our war dead numbers?
