Personally, I wouldn't ignore it. I had a similar problem in my old 420SEL - the gear simply wore out – and finally wore to the point where the seat wouldn’t move. By Murphy’s Law, this occurred far away from home, so driving the car was uncomfortable. Life is a real pain if it fails completely and you can’t move the seat but need to drive!
On my '88, the gear could be changed with moderate mechanical ability, but I have no experience with a '97. I'd take it to a good local automotive upholstery shop.
Of course, if you do not move the seat, it's not a problem. And your's is the passenger seat; which is not a real big inconvenience. But do you really want to own a Mercedes where the passenger seat grinds?
Cheers,
Jeff
