83 300SD details...Sparky The Diesel...
Got tired of my Sparky's tail dragger stance and the 1960's super stock height. Therefore put H & R springs from a SE V8 model. Ran the No.2 spring spacers in the rear and no. 1 spacer in front. In hindsight should have run at least no. 2 or 3 spacers in front. Lowered rear about 2 inches and the front over about 4 inches. I'm runnng 16" wheels/lug bolts from a 1999 SLK with modern tires (7 in. wide rim in front & 8 in. wide rim rear). It all clears on the wheels and is just a plug and play set up. Handling is great, tho a little low in the front. Nose down attitude does help handling on TEXAS long straight roads....especially at super legal speeds. Firmer ride is a given but not too harsh. I do have more control of the car. Wife loves it...but then she normally drives one of the other German brands.....dare I say it...BMW.
Tilt on the curves in town is greatly reduced....and that helps as Dallas traffic does not want you to slow down. Car does not feel as if it is going to capsize. This is an aid in traffic as I do not have to slow so much for corners and diesels do not have acceleration as their forte. Car handling improvement is about 50% modern wheels/tires, 30 % springs/ride height, and 20 % new shocks. Think I may raise up the front next spring and realign, but for now I shall see how it goes.
Regards
Run-Em
