From what the MB mechanic says...When the ABS system does not work you are back to regular brake system, not much of a problem unless you live where is snows, rains, or otherwise you might need to make a panic stop. Cost of repair is high. I have been told that a new controller is $2k a used one can be readily found, but I also have been told that whoever is selling the used one has had to remove the unit from the donor vehicle in a very defined MB way, or the unit is junk. Not sure what to do as I have been told this is true of some part numbers and not true of others.
