Legality-

Just to clear all this legal mumbo jumbo up for everyone- It's illegal ONLY if the car is BRAND-NEW. It violates WTO (World Trade Organization) Laws. HOWEVER, if the "passenger vehicle" has been titled, and taxed, and in use for more than 12 months in its country of vending origin, it THEN can be exported. Now, don't get me wrong, people get around it and the cars are exported all day long- Mercedes-Benz, Toyota Land Cruiser, BMW, and Volvo are among the biggest export cars! There is nothing wrong with this, i personally do not care. It was the initial commentary by the UNINFORMED poster about the dealer forcing the consumer to "Pay Tax" that just pushed me over... HAHA there are 2 things you cant avoid in this world- death and tax.

So, in summary, we do not release the certificate of origin to FORCE THE CUSTOMER INTO PAYING TAX-
It is to prevent the illegal EXPORT of any NEW Mercedes-Benz out of the country.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!
