I have a similar problem also on a '97 W140.
Were you able to get to the adjustment motor or servo? If so, how?
There are basically 2 motors (servos) one to fold, and one to adjust (4way).
From the parts fiche it seems that the 4way servo is available as a spare part and if so, there would be no need to replace the whole mirror. If I can only get the body colored piece behind the mirror off, without breaking it?....
