The early-generation plasmas had the failure issues that have been solved with the later-generation offerings. A day care center my daughter used to attend had the early plasmas that they wound up sending out for repair after about 1 1/2 years of use. Never saw those sets return, though.
Today's sets are good for far longer periods of time. Even so, it's more palatable to replace a $1200 unit after 6 or 7 years than swapping out a $10,000 unit after 3...
