Usually they fail open... be thankful it failed closed
Did you try the bolt in the trunk? There is a manual way to move the sunroof via a bolt in the trunk that is attached to the mechanism. you might be able to get it open enough that way. If the cable is snapped, you might be able to shove it back if you push hard enough.
