I think there is a bracket you have to take off. If I remember, at least on the early ones the pads slide into the bracket, then the caliper swings over the pads. If you look at the parts shop picture there really isn't any way to contain the pads in just the caliper itself:




It's the rear calipers that don't have a bracket, I think.
