Why even let it leak that much and pollute the environment with raw oil when you can fix it?

If the engine is in decent condition, you shouldn't be burning/leaking more than a quart or two every 3000miles. Replacing 1/8th the oil in that amount of time likely won't make up for the increased soot levels and stressed oil.
