E class or C class 4matic wagon

Hey folks:
I'm considering a few wagons with 4matic or AWD capability.

I've started looking at the Mercedes offerings- E and C class 4Matic wagons. Are there years I should prefer/avoid? I've read a ton in the other forums on these cars, but not found generalities such as this. Should I look for a specific year of an older incarnation that will service me better than the newer ones? I'm mainly considering vehicles in the 1999-2005 lightly used range. I've seen a few older w124 4matic wagons floating around...

Also (don't hate me) considering Volvo v70XC cross country, Audi allroad, and Subaru legacy outback... in addition to an oddball possibility in a Honda Element. I would prefer to have the Mercedes, of course- but want to make sure I get what makes sense. I have had 3 w123 diesels (2 wagons), an 87 300SDL, and an 89 300TE in the past and mainly worked on them myself. I wish I could find a 4matic diesel wagon. Did such a creature exist (in the US)?

I'll not be spending a lot of time driving off road. I may decide at some point to want to tow something, but the main purpose of needing the awd capacity is getting around in the country where we live in our new house on the lake. We've had almost 3 feet of snow so far this year. Navigating the miniature Toyota Yaris through the snow has been an adventure I don't wish to visit upon my fiance.

Thanks!
k
