When the window regulator breaks the motor chews up the cable and the plastic roller at the top of the reg breaks in my expirience. Usually hear some crunching and grinding when it happens.

Pull door panel, drill out rivets and re-install new reg. I used small SS nuts and bolts rather than MB's super heavy steel rivets.
