as long as the "shield" had somewhere for air to exit, this should work fine... it's possible that a total seal would be OK, since the radiator area could still vent out the wheelwells.
you could also put some behind the MB grille, to block air from entering the engine bay in the first place. the area around the grille would still let plenty of air pass over the radiator. you would have to make it adjustable, so it would still cool in the summer, and allow air to properly pass over the condenser for a/c...
a proper air dam below the bumper may help... it may also provide downforce, that may negate drag reduction... hmm.
