Have you tried reaching carefully from the front of the motor? You need a longish arm and won't get much of a grip on a 6 point box end wrench, but it should work.

Also, a short socket, a 2" extension and a ratchet should fit in the little space just under the manifold. A short socket that has a built in swivel (about 6$ at sears) is helpful.

When getting the manifold back in, take care to not over tighten the bolts/nuts. This is how I started my first v8 valve job. Nothing like breaking a stud in a confined space like that.
