Since 2003, it's had miserable reconstruction going on. The project is about halfway done. From Katy to Highway 6 about 15 mi out of Houston, the freeway has been reconstructed and widened to 4 lanes in each direction with one diamond lane added in each direction. From Highway 6 to I-610, the freeway is still being widened from 3 lanes in each direction to 4 lanes in each direction plus 2 diamond lanes in each direction. By the time it's done, late this year or maybe 2009-2012, it will be the widest freeway in Houston. The widest sections will have 18 lanes across, including the feeder roads and c/d lanes.

And knowing how fast people breed, it will already be inadequate to handle the traffic.
