Question Ignition wires

I've been reading several threads today about plugs (NO RESISTORS !),
rotor/cap, etc.. and ignition wires. But.....

How often should a wire set be replaced? or conversley, how long should
a set last in the high heat of the engine compartment?

I noticed of the 6 plug connectors, a few do not seat down (by 1/4")
as far as their neighbors. Is there some 'trick' to get one fully sung ?
