Wrong, Square lights were on ALL 280's from day one (coupes and sedans), as well as 230ce's, then went on the rest of the line in 1982. Think of it as low/high models. Originally all low models had round lights, 1 piece euro bumpers and the like.

The 280's and 230ce had 3 piece bumpers, square lights and other options (chrome trim under tail lights, chrome cowls, etc).
