I remember when a lot of things had distinctive smells.

Oiled canvas tarps & tents; kapok sleeping bags; natural car interiors wool & leather, pipe tobacco, oiled wood furniture; wool clothing; men's hair oil (vitalis), gun cleaning kits smelled like bananas.
Products made from real materials and not plastic.
My dad was a wood shop teacher in the 50's & 60's...walking into that wood shop would knock you over with so many mixed smells of walnut, cherry, oak, pine, shellac, alcohol, spar varnish, linseed oil, hot glue pots, machinery oil, Lard oil, ozone, etc.....
