You guys have already identified this as an apples to oranges comparison. Perhaps I can provide a little more insight. Consider that the ML is built in an automated factory in Alabama by UAW. The G by comparison is hand built with almost no automation. They even bend brake lines by hand still. Automation brings efficeincy and consistancy to production. It does not see the occasional flaws the human worker can dectect and correct. I think the E-class, S-class comparison is close, in many cases the G employs more expensive materials which obviously raise the price.

I have heard that while the early MLs had some quality issue, that MB has responded and corrected them. I drove an ML500, it seemed very solid, very MB, and it is pretty dang fast to boot. The Gs built prior to the new MBUSA 2002 version are legendary for their build quaility. The paint on my old '90 300GE was better than that on my wifes '98 BMW. The paint on my '95 is equally superior. They are built like the MBs of old. That said, there are some problems on the new model. Some people have been having issues with the electronics when using the low range and differential locks. This is certainly caused by this being the first new interior design in over 10 years, which has added many electro gizmo luxury items to the G. They have also tried to greatly increase production to meet growing US demand. It may prove to be a challenge to maintain the old quality at the new volume, time will tell.

If you don't intend to utilize the Gs off-road capabilities the extra money is likely wasted. The ML500 is a pretty nice machine. Still the feel of the G on the road is very unique. It is truely akin to driving a bank vault. The truck is incredibly solid, the view is great, and the militaristic styling is something rare in todays car market. I can go either way on this one. On a budget the ML is great. Price be dammed the G is a very unique machine. Consider that the former importer in New Mexico reports that they have never worn out a Gwagen. Considering that they have been around over 20 years, I think that says a lot about the truck.

Let us know what you think after you drive both. Good luck with your decision.
