There are members in this forum and on the benzsport forum that have done this. Owners of both 124 and 201 chassis vehicles. The results are very impressive and so far no reports of pinging (everyone is using high octane fuel)
The euro spec vehicles come with the adjuster that allows you to adjust the retard, the minimal setting on the switch is 0 retard, which can be achieved by just removing our US spec 750 ohm reistor and leaving the circuit open.
Pre-odbi and odbii vehicles used devices like this to control ignition timing. On later model vehicles, ignition timing is controlled by the ECU, that is why there are after market performance chips or re-programming services available and if you notice they will all say "use 92+ octane gas" this is one of the easist and quickest ways to gain power, other items that can be adjusted via the chip/reprogram method include; bumping up the rev limiter or removing it altogether, eliminating top speed governers and decreasing the temp at which the electric fans come on (normally requires a different thermostat).
Aftermarket chips can do more or less, its kind of dependent upon who designed the chip and the vehicle.
