I feel a little foolish but I added a half a quart of fluid and now it shifts fine. However, the dipstick shows a little over full. When the transmission was cold, the fluid level was just below the bottom line. So I added a little and the problem resolved. But when it warmed up, the level is about a half inch above the top line. I guess this transmission is fussy about the fluid level. Sorry for bothering everyone when I overlooked something so obvious.
