Its probably a valve body problem or dead clutch packs on the 3rd/4th gears. In which case it probably needs to be torn down. Is it a high miles tranny?

You mentioned metal flecks in the pan when you took it off.....its been my experience that you should never actually see any metal particles in the pan on these trannys....they are very precise and metal particles means something bad is happening or happened.
