Try George Pal's 1960 "Time Machine," with Rod Taylor, or the 1956 "Forbidden Planet," with Leslie Nielsen and Anne Francis.

They both have that "sense of wonder" quality that written SF shoots for and that the movies so rarely manage. And you can have fun comparing and contrasting "Forbidden Planet" and "Star Trek."
