Now my 300SDL runs absolutely superb. It starts/runs/drives just fine. The only time it smokes a little is after starting on a cold day or under hard acceleration / full power. Other than that, it is great. No visible smoke on the highway or under moderate acceleration.
The injector replacement was very easy. I ran into 2 minor problems...1. Two of the old injectors were VERY difficult to remove. It took a 3 ft extender on the socket to remove them. Then one of my new injectors was leaking where the injector body screws into the larger housing. I also replaced the heat shields under the injector, the braided fuel return hoses, and used some anti-seize on the new injectors.
The process was pretty straight forward. 1. Remove crossover pipe 2. Remove the pre-bent fuel lines running from pump to injectors 3. Remove braided fuel return lines and end plug 4. Remove injectors and heat shields 5. Install new heat shields 6. Install injectors after applying a SMALL amount of anti-seize and torque to spec 7. Reinstall braided fuel lines and plug 8. Reinstall pre-bent fuel lines and seals at the pump end. I think it took about 30 or 45 min to do the job.
In the last 50k miles, my car has had several thousand $$$ in work including front-end suspension rebuild, radiator, new trans and torque converter, new head/valves, timing chain/guides, AC work, and a new dash.
My next projects are new front brakes and rotors, a new stereo system, and a new exhaust resonator and pipe. I have the stereo equipment and rotors/pads for the brakes, just need to find the time to do it. I've yet to look for a resonator. I noticed it just the other day when I was poking around under the car.
There just ins't any other car out there quite like an MB, and I'm biased toward the W126. My car has abour 255k miles on it now and is still rock solid. I'm sure you are enjoying yours.
