I've just been through this -- twice!! -- on a w126, which is not that different, just longer.

It takes very little time to remove the WHOLE rear end assembly, maybe 45 minutes to an hour, depending on tools. It takes longer to install another, as much as 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

But shops use things like Alldata to estimate, and Alldata says it takes 6 hours. With a lift, and a tranny lift, it's not that difficult, but what're ya gonna do....
