Volvo S40
Anyone have any comments on the Volvo S40? I test drove one the other day, and it was pretty nice for a small 4 cylander front wheel drive car. The steering felt more solid than the S60, which I know has been criticized for its over assisted steering. I think there may be some reliability problems with the S40, as I think there might be with all modern Volvos. I've never owned one though.
I also drove the following:
Saab 9-3. Didn't like it. Steering felt over assisted, but not as bad as Volvo S60. Didn't drive straight, but this was probably just a simple allignment problem. It was ok, but just ok.
Saturn L 200 and 300. Actually liked these cars alot. Felt solid and drove well. Obviously very utilitarian, however. But I think a great car for the money. The 200 with manual transmission was fun, but the 300, which only comes with automatic, was quieter and of course more powerful. I preferred both these cars to the Saab or Volvo S60.
Mercedes C 230 Coupe. Fantastic car. One of the most enjoyable cars I've ever driven, really. Everything just felt right. Smooth, stable, good power, steering just right, suspension firm but very comfortable. Only complaint was that I didn't think the speakers were very good, and the cloth upholstory isn't great. I think its just a little too small for my needs though. Also, with some options like the sun roof, automatic, leather and sport wheels, I think the price is over $30,000, which is starting to get high for the car.
