Hmmm....good pics, thanks for clarifying. I dunno, that last one really throws me off. In that one, it almost looks like a thin parge coat is simply spalling away..but in others, the stone look deteriorated...I'd be interested to hear what others have to say too.
Bottom line is, you want/need a fix.....and I'd personally seal it up. What did you read that said something to the contrary?
I'm sure you could knock off the loose stuff and color mix a mortar or mortal
to patch it. Structurally, I think you're fine....I'm presuming your concern in aesthetics?
