Whunter has posted some links for further reading. There are lots of things to read there, but don't be confused by the posts that refer to disabling ASR. The procedures in those posts don't bypass your failing ETA, but describe ways to overide the ASR's intervention when a wheel breaks traction.

But you do have a 16 pin connector from which to read fault codes, with essentially the same blink code reader, although the CIS diagnostic system is less advanced than the LH motors of 1993 SLs. Indeed disabling ASR does not rid one of all ASR / limp home mode problems. It seems that many people confuse the two concepts.
