Well, I'm new at this but here goes.

I have a 1984 300D Turbo Diesel sedan with 307,000 miles. Since I received the car at around 300,000 miles, it has clunked when I put it into reverse, whether hot or cold. The clunk is strong enough to raise the rear of the car a bit. It goes into drive just fine. If the car is rolling backward at 1 - 2 mph (such as down the driveway) it won't clunk, but engages ok.

The vacuum system is being replaced one hose at a time, and doesn't seem to have any impact on this problem.

Any ideas on this one? Thank you.
