Thanks guys - excellent advice. When the thing wouldn't start for me, the first thing I checked was to see whether I had back up lights when the car was in reverse. When I didn't, I figured that maybe the problem was with the neutral safety switch, but I didn't know what it looked like or where it was. I for some reason assumed it was in the shifter unit and accessible from the inside of the car. Thought that the two pin connector inside the shifter might have been it. Then when you guys pointed out where it was, what it looked like and how to fix it, it was about a ten minute job and all is well. The arrow in the photo below points to the pin that was not engaged as Fred indicated. Working on my back under the car, I never noticed that pin was even there.
